Massive 150 tonne-plus truss erected for new EcoPark

Caunton Engineering are progressing on schedule with the erection of the North London Waste Authority’s new sustainable waste management hub, known as Edmonton EcoPark. The facility is expected to cater for up to 700,000 tonnes of residual waste from the seven north London boroughs.
Working on behalf of main contractor Taylor Woodrow, the company is fabricating, supplying and erecting 1,963t of steelwork for the project. The engineer for this prestige project is the Waterman Partnership.
Included in this steelwork is a massive truss 71 metres long weighing over 150 tonnes. The truss is in fact 6.4 metres high – as seen in the accompanying video - courtesy of Ainscough Crane Hire Ltd.
The connections designed by Caunton’s technical team are in themselves a massive undertaking. Some of the main boom splice plates are 40mm thick, 1900mm long and weigh 262 kg each. The main boom splices have 120 tension control bolts in each connection with each bolt weighing around 2.4kg. In fact all connections required tension control bolts (1476 in total).
Erection of this massive truss was achieved with one X 1000T crane and one X 850T crane both rigged as 750T cranes. The truss had to be ‘held’ with the two large cranes until a further 40T of steelwork had been installed to stabilise the truss and allow the Caunton erection team to release them.
Quite some achievement by the Caunton Engineering team.
