Caunton Engineering fabricated and supplied the structural steelwork for the 88 Royal Mint Street development in London E1. The project was delivered by IJM Group, with Midgard Ltd acting as the main contractor and structural design by Whitby Wood. This development formed the final phase of a larger 650,000sq.ft scheme delivered by Network Rail and IJM Land.
Caunton supplied more than 1,200 tonnes of steelwork, including large podium trusses designed to support the concrete structure above. These elements formed two major steel transfer structures within the 14-storey mixed-use development. The fabrication was carried out in Caunton’s workshops to meet the project’s complex engineering requirements.
A key feature of the scheme was its construction over active railway infrastructure. The northern steel structure spanned part of a Network Rail Viaduct, while the southern structure was positioned directly above two encapsulated Docklands Light Railway Lines. The trusses reached up to 13 metres in length and 3.5 metres in height, enabling load transfer while maintaining a 5-metre clearance for trains passing.
