The Kings Pool site on Foss Island adjacent to the River Foss in York was developed to produce a series of three and four storey steel framed office buildings with associated car park for immediate occupancy by MAFF.
Ove Arup & Partners provided all structural and civil engineering design services plus acoustic advice for a two stage tender, and was then novated to the successful Contractor to complete the £12m contract.
The internal envelope at foundation level was full of pile caps due to the nature of the low lying ground. The site was enclosed by a canal on one side and a main road on the other side. As a result of this Caunton carried out all erection from within the confines of the internal court yards.
Caunton built the beam & column structure on a fast track programme using just in time manufacturing and deliveries to reduce congestion on the site. The hipped roofs were all constructed in steelwork enclosing the plant rooms for the complex.
