This project, situated on the north bank of the River Thames, will be the UK’s first 21st Century major deep-sea container port. Furthermore it is planned to be Europe’s largest logistics park, and will offer individual units up to and in excess of one million square feet. The project is being undertaken by DP World one of the largest marine terminal operators in the world. Construction began in February 2010, and is expected to take several years, with the port and logistics park completed in stages.
Caunton has designed and supplied nearly 200te of framing steelwork for two buildings, the Border Control Post and the Border Force Examination building. Main contractor for the buildings is Buckingham. Both buildings are portal framed, one 25m span 45 m long and the other 30.5metres, 117 metres long. The project heralds a massive boom in building on the site. The artist’s impression gives an idea of the magnitude of the project. Caunton hopes of course that there will be more work for the company on this site in the future.
