Caunton have started work on a new ASDA store in Newark. The site is the former Potterdyke car park, but the wider scheme includes a new bus station, doctors’ surgery, health centre, retail units, housing and over four hundred car parking spaces.

The store itself is set to open by Christmas 2011 and will have a 32,500 sq.ft sales area and will create up to 350 full and part-time jobs for local people.

Caunton are designing, supplying and erecting over 1000te of structural steelwork for the project, by way of a design and build contract with main contractor Simons Construction. Steelwork for the project is required not only for the ASDA store but for the retail units and a single storey car park, plus the new bus station. The company are also responsible for the supplying and fixing of precast floor planks, precast stairs, metal decking plus a spiral staircase access ramp leading to the car park deck.

A further interesting technical responsibility was the need to design the structure, which also included the retail units and car park deck, so that the frames could be part erected and operational, before some of the site’s existing buildings are decommissioned. The final components of these structures will be erected some 12 months later.

The design of the car park deck was also such that it matches the fire strategy requirements of the site, and this includes designing a section of car park to be capable of supporting fire trucks.

This is the seventh ASDA store Caunton have helped build in as many years. To quote a cliché – Caunton continue to be spot on with “ASDA price”.
