On the new Rochdale Municipal Offices Project, contractor Sir Robert McAlpine is tight for time with the tower cranes. The design is for a series of concrete structures linked by steel walkways. The contract for the steel walkways was placed with Caunton Engineering. With the demands on the tower cranes’ time at a premium, Caunton developed an offsite modular approach. The links were designed, fabricated and fitted out off site. This meant that the programme time, from arrival on site to installation, was under one hour per link walkway. For it to be a safe and operational walkway giving faster and safe access from building to building, programme time was under 3 hours. In other words, by not taking the steel to site piece meal, erecting it a piece at a time, then netting, decking, adding hand railing and finally fire protecting it, days of vital tower crane time were saved.
