Caunton Engineering completed the steelwork contract for the new Debenhams store in Bury St Edmunds. Taylor Woodrow were the main contractor for the massive 5.38 hectare, £100million Cattlemarket Shopping Centre development of which Debenhams is the anchor store. The developers were Centros Miller in partnership with the local St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

The steelwork itself comprises mainly a composite beam & column structure, with curved tubular facade supports. Stability is provided by steelwork connected to concrete shear cores. But in addition there is to be a striking auditorium roof structure designed by architect Hopkins Architects and WSP Consulting Engineers incorporating lattice girders supported by load bearing masonry walls. An artist’s impression of the store’s exciting façade is shown in the accompanying illustration.
